Isaiah Hill
Personal Life
Isaiah Hill is thought to have been born around 1816 in Bilston and had a Wesleyan baptism 2 years later in Ettingshall. He was the son of John Hill (a miner) and his wife Sarah. His early life was spent in Bilston.
In 1838, he married a lady called Ann Burnish and by 1851 he and his family were living in Wednesfield, where the census listed him at ‘Merryels Hole House’ in March End, with the occupation of Mine Agent. Mine Agents were senior managers of collieries, responsible for their development, mining methods, and commercial management. There are several references to him as a Coal Master, which would imply that he may have owned a mine. By the time of the 1861 census, he was also a farmer of 38 acres.
