Richard Edge
Personal Life
Richard Edge was born, and spent his early life, in Wolverhampton. His mother, Mary, died in 1846 from puerperal fever. The following year, his father, Samuel, remarried to Jane Green and the family moved to March End.
Initially, Richard became a Miner, like his father, but by 1871 he is listed at 16 High Street with the occupation of Higgler—basically a travelling salesman or peddler. Eventually he became a poultry dealer, an occupation he stayed in for over 20 years.
He and his family remained in High Street throughout the remainder of his life until his death. His son, also Richard, joined the family business, and the 1901 census shows father and son with their respective families, living next door to each other in High Street.
Richard senior served on various Wednesfield Urban District Council committees during the late 19th century. His wife, Martha died in 1903, and Richard himself passed away seven years later in 1910.
