William Enoch

Personal Life

William Enoch was born in Cumnor in Berkshire, and seems to have spent the early part of his life there, his father and grandfather both being Cumnor people.  Over the course of his life, he gradually worked his way to Wednesfield via various places including Swindon (where he is recorded as a Police Constable) and Willenhall (where he was an Insurance Agent and House Furniture Dealer). It is in the latter capacity that he came to Bolton Road, Wednesfield, somewhere between the years 1901 and 1911.

In 1877, William married Anne Kinson of Shareshill, at Cannock, and the couple had a large family.  Anne passed away in 1928, and at some time between then and 1939, William went to live with his married daughter and her husband (Beatrice & Bertie Brown) at ‘Reinwood’, Prestwood Road.

William’s eldest son, Frederick William Kinson Enoch, married a lady named Harriet Walker, and their son William Leslie Enoch, married into the Pickering family of High Street, Wednesfield, and became the father of 4 children including Margaret Enoch who is referred to in the ‘Eric Pickering’ story-from-the stones’.

An interesting connection appears through one of William’s other sons, Alfred James Enoch.  Alfred relocated for a while to Sunderland, possibly because of his WW1 service, and there he married a lady called Eva Compston Pile.  They had one son – William Russell Enoch.  William Russell Enoch became an actor, sometimes known as William Russell, and sometimes as William Enoch.  This William has a long line of acting credits to his name ranging through television, film, theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.  He passed away in June 2024 just a few months short of his 100th birthday.  So, William Russell Enoch and Margaret Enoch, were first cousins once removed.

The original William from Cumnor in Berkshire, died of old age at Burton House Infirmary in Sedgley, in 1943, aged 87, and is buried in the cemetery as per the headstone above.
